Cyber bullying on girls (NZ)

What does it mean: The use of communication online that entails a intimidating or threatening nature typically through sending messages, share hurtful information about the person online is called CyberBullying, Girls are 3 times more likely to be cyberbullied than boys, this means that girls are more likely to be both victims and perpetrators of cyber bullying.


Cyber bullying takes many forms across a variety of cyber venues; which includes

- Receiving mean or hurtful text messages from someone

- Receiving nasty, threatening or hurtful messages through social media

- People sending photos and videos of you to others without your permission to try and embarrass or hurt you

- People spreading rumours or lies about you using social networking sites or text messages

- People trying to stop you from communicating with others or excluding you from chat groups


Why it's hard:

- It might take time, it's a hard topic to deal which can be from:

- people view/take part of it , it can be saved and recorded in different places so if its a spreading of images or videos the content is shared and hard to get rid of.

- The feeling of being excluded can lead to feeling lonely which can conduct to a bigger issue when it comes to a person’s mental well-being

- You can feel guilty - like it might be your fault how things turned out

- You might feel hopeless and stuck like there’s nothing you can do about it or stop it

- You might feel like an outcast

- You might start feeling unsafe and afraid in familiar environments and scared to face other people especially in school

- stressed-out wondering what to do and why this took place the way it did


5 steps you can take to help you deal with a cyberbullying situation.
  1. Don't respond immediately
  2. Go about the situation with calmer mindset to approach the issue logically
  3. Take evidence and screenshots
  4. Stay offline and try not to frequently go back to where the issue lies
  5. Report/Block and take action by reaching out

  • Talk to friends, family or your school counsellor about what’s been going on.

  • Find something else you can do for those times that you don’t want to be online, can be a hobby you enjoy
